Hill House – an example of how a 1970s building can be transformed.

Complete refurbishment, extension and modernisation:

This project involved extending the property at ground floor level and, using the natural slope of the site, creating accommodation at the lower ground floor level. All floors benefit from fantastic views of the Bristol Channel, the Mendips and the wonderful Victorian rooftops of  Clevedon.

I did a great deal of the construction work myself. I believe it is important for an architect to have a sound understanding of building technology and, having built a retaining wall 3.5 metres high, I can confirm that I have a clear understanding of construction!

First floor extension and complete internal modernisation:

This project involved an extension at first floor level whereby a completely new roof was constructed over the original roof to create four double bedrooms (one with en-suite facilities) and a family bathroom. The ground floor was opened up to form an open plan arrangement with a new staircase in a different configuration thereby creating more space at both levels. A new kitchen was also installed.

Two-storey extension and modernisation:

Stonework repairs to Victorian house:

This project was essentially a maintenance scheme to preserve the stonework which was beginning to deteriorate due to sand/cement mortar having been used as pointing previously. This was raked out and replaced with lime mortar while many of the eroded stone sections were fully replaced.
